On July 25, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta honored individuals with the Head of State Commendation award during Jamhuri Day celebrations, including Patrick Mwalua Kilonzo, a farmer who had captured the hearts of many for his selfless act of delivering water to thirsty wild animals at Tsavo national park.

Mr. Kilonzo, who has been battling kidney failure for the past seven years, was handed the award by Tourism Minister Najib Balala. He expressed his gratitude on social media, saying, "This is a day I will never forget. Minister Najib Balala, the minister of Tourism and Wildlife, honoring me with the Head of State Commendation award from the President of the Republic of Kenya for my efforts of helping animals during drought seasons in Tsavo Park."

Mr. Kilonzo's story gained popularity in 2017 after it was highlighted by Nairobi News for his mission of buying and delivering water to the animals at Tsavo. He has since found a sponsor for his treatment in India, courtesy of Maithri Company, which is facilitating his travel and treatment.
