On July 25, 2019, the Dr. Bitange Ndemo-led taskforce on Distributed-Ledger and Artificial Intelligence released its report, recommending the adoption of blockchain technology and artificial intelligence to combat corruption in Kenya.

The report, which was handed over to the Information Communications and Technology (ICT) Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru, proposes the use of technology to transform Kenya into a technological giant.

Mucheru welcomed the report, stating that it covers important areas that the country must address to move forward in technology. He expressed excitement about the proposal to have electronic elections by 2022, which would enable the announcement of election results by midnight on Election Day.

The CS highlighted the taskforce's recommendation for the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) governor Dr. Patrick Njoroge to become the governor of the digital currency for the world, leveraging the success of M-pesa.

According to Mucheru, the adoption of technology as detailed in the report will lead to the creation of many jobs, particularly in the field of freelancers and skilled manpower for artificial intelligence companies globally.

Dr. Bitange Ndemo, the taskforce chairman, emphasized that several companies in Kenya have begun adopting these technologies, solving real problems. He cited the example of the Huduma Namba, which will help create a trusted identity and solve election-related issues.

The report proposes the use of blockchain and AI to deal with corruption, food safety, and other issues, making government processes more efficient and transparent.
