On July 25, 2019, South African retailer Game Stores made a significant foray into Kenya's retail market by opening its third outlet in Kisumu's Mega City Mall, marking its first branch outside Nairobi.

The move by Massmart Holdings' subsidiary follows the successful launch of its Garden City and Karen Waterfront outlets.

Game's new outlet will occupy prime space on the ground floor of the mall, while Nakumatt, the mall's former anchor tenant, has been relegated to the first floor.

Kenya's retail market has been growing rapidly, with a Citigroup study showing that about 30 percent of retail shopping is done in formal outlets, making it the second most developed retail market in sub-Saharan Africa.

According to the Retail Trade Association of Kenya (Retrak), the supermarket sector features 25 key players, with indigenous investors enjoying a 98.21 percent market share.
