On July 17, Steve Bruce took over as the manager of Newcastle United, replacing Rafael Benitez. However, his appointment has been met with mixed feelings from the fans, who have been critical of owner Mike Ashley's perceived lack of spending.

Speaking to the press, Bruce, a boyhood Magpies fan, emphasized that he would not be a 'yes man' to Ashley. 'I think you've known me long enough. I'm not going to be anybody's yes man,' he said.

Despite the criticism, Bruce is optimistic about his chances of winning over the fans. He pointed to the club-record £40m signing of Brazilian striker Joelinton as a positive step forward.

‘All I can ask is to be given a chance. Whoever was going to be sitting here would find it difficult with the support (Benitez) had from the fans – it was quite phenomenal. Unbelievable,’ he said.
