On July 25, 2019, the Safaricom National Deaf Track & Field Championships Trials took place at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, with Hannah Wanjiru emerging as the winner of the 5000M women's race.
Wanjiru completed the race in 19:37.7, followed closely by Juster Kwamesa at 20:13.4 and Laureen Ngonga in third place at 20:40.4.
Other notable winners of the day included Martin Gachie, who won the 5000M men's category in 14:49.0, and Hannah Wakonyo, who took the top spot in the 800M women's race with a time of 2:29.6.
As the trials came to a close, the Deaf Athletics Association of Kenya (DAAK) announced that the selected teams would represent the country at the 1st Africa Deaf Athletics Championships, set to take place in Kenya from September 16th to 22nd, 2019.
Kenya currently holds Deaflympic titles in the 1,500m and 3,000m races, and Safaricom's sponsorship of the trials is part of their 2019 edition of the Safaricom Athletics Series, which supports 12 different events in this year's athletics calendar.
