On March 26, 2015, President Uhuru Kenyatta publicly named Ukur Yattani, then the Governor of Marsabit County, in his 'list of shame' during the State of the Nation address in Parliament.
Yattani was one of 12 governors accused of abusing their office, mismanaging funds, and engaging in corruption, including the purchase of motor vehicles and manipulation of the county budget.
Although no cases were brought against Yattani and the other governors, the move marked a significant moment in Kenyatta's efforts to tackle corruption in government.
Fast forward to 2023, Yattani has been named as the acting National Treasury Cabinet Secretary, a plum cabinet portfolio that comes with significant responsibilities.
His appointment comes on the heels of the resignation of his predecessor, Henry Rotich, who is facing corruption charges related to the Arror and Kimwarer multi-billion shilling dams scandal.
Yattani, an economist by training, will also continue to serve as the Labour and Social Protection Minister, a role he has held concurrently with his new appointment.
