On July 25, 2019, the government of Kenya announced plans to register and license artisans and technicians graduating from Technical and Vocational Training (TVET) institutions.

Speaking during a stakeholder's forum organized by the Kenya Engineering Technology Registration Board (KETREB) and partners, Principal Secretary Dr. Kevit Desai emphasized the importance of recognizing artisans and controlling the industry.

Dr. Desai challenged KETREB to proactively engage with artisans, stating, "Artisans need to be recognized for their role in development, KETRB was formed under government and should bring stakeholders together and move to sites and involve artisans more."

He also announced plans by the ministry of education to finance KETREB, ensuring it fully fulfils its mandate.

These plans come after a long struggle between KETREB and the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), where the latter has insisted on registering only university graduates, neglecting those from technical institutions.
