On July 24, 2019, the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) appointed Mamo B Mamo as acting director general, replacing Geoffrey Wahungu who is facing charges over the Sh63 billion Kerio dams scandal.

Mr. Wahungu was arrested on Monday for his alleged involvement in the scandal, accused of overseeing the irregular issuance of environmental assessment approvals despite a lack of feasibility study on the Kimwarer dam.

Mr. Mamo, previously the deputy director in charge of environmental education and public participation at Nema, was appointed to the board of directors at the environment agency on Wednesday.
