A parliamentary committee has urged the government to conduct a thorough investigation into the killings of two politicians in Baringo County.
Tiaty parliamentary aspirant Pepee Kitambaa and Loyamorok Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Kibet Cheretei were assassinated at a nightclub in Marigat town on a Saturday night.
Asman Kamama, chairman of the parliamentary administrative and security committee, denied any involvement in the killings, stating that he is also a target of the assassins, according to intelligence reports.
Kandara MP Alice Wahome requested that the Inspector General and the Interior Cabinet Secretary, Joseph Nkaissery, increase security in the county ahead of the General Election.
Wahome said, "We do not want a repeat of what happened after the disputed 2007/08 presidential election, I urge the top security chiefs to up their game to avoid polarising the country."
Other legislators, including Kapenguria MP Samuel Moroto and Yatta MP Francis Mwangangi, appealed for calm among the North Rift communities and cautioned leaders against making inflammatory statements.
Nominated MP Sarah Lekorere called on the government to investigate threats made against aspiring candidates and take action against the perpetrators to protect lives.
Lekorere emphasized that elections should not be a matter of life and death, noting that there are alternative ways to serve the country beyond politics.
