Between 2010 and 2012, approximately 100,000 elephants were lost to poaching across Africa. The number of elephants poached has not shown significant signs of diminishing in the following years. Additionally, it is estimated that over 1,000 rhinos were poached in South Africa alone last year.
On April 30, 2016, opposition leader Raila Odinga made a statement accusing President Uhuru's family of being involved in elephant poaching and the ivory trade.
