Surgeons from China have successfully performed a pioneering surgery on a 23-year-old woman born without a vagina. The medical team used a piece of the woman's small intestine to create an artificial vagina.
The woman was diagnosed with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome, a rare congenital abnormality characterized by the absence of a vagina, womb, and cervix. This condition affects approximately 1 in every 5,000 women worldwide.
After scanning the woman's body, doctors found that she had functioning ovaries but lacked a vagina and uterus. With the aid of a special robot designed for minimal invasive surgery, the surgeons were able to perform the operation and create an artificial vagina that resembles and functions like a normal one.
However, the medical team has warned that if the patient wishes to have children in the future, a uterus transplant surgery would be necessary. The operation marks a significant breakthrough for patients with the same condition.
