Nairobi County traffic officials announced major city roads would be closed from midnight on Saturday to 4pm on Sunday for the First Lady Half Marathon.
Officer Commanding Traffic, Musyoki Mutungi, assured participants, motorists, and pedestrians of adequate security during the event.
Motorists and pedestrians using Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway, Kenyatta Avenue, Processional Way, Cathedral Road, Ngong Road, Mbagathi Road, Langata Road, Aerodome Road, and Lower Hill Road will need to find alternative routes.
Additional roads to be closed include Chyulu road, Hospital road, Mara road, Masaba road, Ole Sangale Link road leading to Madaraka Estate and Strathmore University, and Bunyala road.
Traffic diversion plans are in place, including diverting traffic on Mombasa road at General Motors, with motorists required to access the CBD through either Enterprise road or the wrong side of Mombasa road, which will be used as a single carriage way.
Specific diversions include:
- Motorists going to Ngong road from the Railway roundabout will be diverted at Uhuru Highway roundabout to access City Mortuary roundabout through University way.
- Motorists from Ngong road and Mbagathi Way will be diverted at the City Mortuary roundabout to use Valley road and Mbagathi way wrong side.
- Those using Valley road will be diverted at Valley road Junction to access their destinations through Jakaya Kikwete road.
The event is expected to attract a large number of dignitaries, including governors, ambassadors, cabinet secretaries, and captains of industry. Elite runners will also participate in the marathon, which starts and ends at the Nyayo National Stadium.
First Lady Margaret Kenyatta will flag off the 21km race at 7am and then participate in the 10km race at 8am.
As of Friday evening, additional sponsors had contributed an extra Sh12 million to the marathon, bringing the total funds raised to Sh201 million, excluding registration fees.
