Charles Agutu, the supporter in question, views his unwavering backing of President Kenyatta as embodying the true spirit of democracy. Despite recognizing the slim chances of securing a victory for Uhuru in Homa Bay, Agutu remains committed to his cause.
As Agutu prepares to campaign for President Kenyatta’s re-election, he expresses a desire to meet with the President and his deputy, William Ruto. In an interview with the People Daily in Kisii, Agutu stated, "I want to meet my President and his deputy for 10 minutes to share some advice with them."
Agutu has a long history with President Kenyatta, having served as his poll agent in Mawego during the 2002 elections, when Kenyatta ran on a Kanu ticket and lost to retired President Mwai Kibaki. Undeterred by this loss, Agutu continued to support Kenyatta through his transitions from Kanu to The National Alliance (TNA) and eventually to the Jubilee Party.
Agutu retains some of President Kenyatta’s campaign T-shirts from 2002, featuring the Kanu jogoo logo. He emphasizes the importance of ensuring that agents for candidates at polling stations are not harassed, suggesting that such actions could pave the way for electoral fraud and subsequent costly poll petitions. Agutu urges the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission and security officers to take measures to prevent such harassment.
