A recent incident in Nairobi's Runda Estate involved a National Youth Service (NYS) official registering people in a church, sparking controversy as it occurred parallel to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) mass voter registration exercise.
According to reports, angry residents stormed the church upon discovering the 'illegal exercise' and confronted the NYS officials. The official initially denied secretly registering voters using NYS kits.
IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba, who arrived at the scene after police were called, also denied that NYS kits could register voters. However, he condemned the ongoing NYS registration, stating it caused panic among Kenyans.
A video shared by KTN shows the NYS official revealing to the police that he was instructed by a Member of County Assembly allied to the Jubilee Party to register people at various locations, including Mathare, City Park, and PCEA church in Runda.
The official claimed that upon arrival in Runda, he found many people already waiting for him, apparently shipped to the venue.
