A crisis occurred at the Likoni ferry channel when three out of four vessels broke down, causing significant congestion and delays. Commuters, in desperation, ignored protocols to rush for the single operational ferry.

In response to the situation, Kenya Ferry Service management deployed MV Likoni and MV Harambee, despite their faulty prows, in an attempt to manage the unrest among commuters who had breached the control gates.
