Micheal Olunga, the Harambee Stars and Gor Mahia striker, may be leaving Gor Mahia after initial discussions about extending his contract were unsuccessful.
According to Nairobi News, Olunga met with club Chairman Ambrose Rachier to discuss a potential one-year contract extension but presented what were deemed "unrealistic" demands.
A source close to the negotiations told Nairobi News that Olunga’s initial request included a sign-on fee in the region of Sh5 million to stay with the club for another year. The source described this figure as unrealistic due to the club’s financial constraints, not because of Olunga’s worth to the team.
Contract Details and Expiry ¶
Olunga’s current contract with Gor Mahia is set to expire, and he has been a crucial player for the 2015 Kenyan Premier League champions, scoring 19 league goals and earning the season’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
Other clubs, including Moroccan side Raja Casablanca and South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, have shown interest in Olunga. Raja Casablanca previously bid around Sh20 million for him in November, but were unsuccessful.
Matthew Booth, former Sundowns and Bafana Bafana defender, praised Olunga, saying,
I have seen Olunga in action for Kenya and his team Gor Mahia. I think he is a lot busier and more hardworking than (Leonardo) Castro and he will offer Sundowns much more.
