A High Court decision has been made regarding the security laws passed by Parliament and assented to by President Uhuru Kenyatta. The court declined to suspend these laws as requested by CORD and the Kenya National Human Rights Commission (KNHRC), who sought urgent orders until their challenge to the laws is heard and determined.
The KNHRC also sought suspension of the decision to retire Inspector General David Kimaiyo until a case challenging it is heard. However, the High Court denied these orders, with the case set to be heard on December 29.
CORD's challenge focuses on several provisions of the new law, alleging they alter criminal procedures in Kenya and infringe upon basic human rights and freedoms. Their case was presented before High Court Judge Isaac Lenaola.
