Published on July 24, 2019, Nairobi County MP Silvia Museiya has proposed that parents teach their children their mother tongue if a new law is passed.

According to Museiya, the proposal aims to empower children to express themselves better in their mother tongue without any constraints, especially when writing essays in their mother tongue.

"It is good for a child to know multiple languages, for instance, I am a Maasai but I speak Kikuyu fluently," Museiya said.

Museiya emphasized that teaching children their mother tongue helps to revive languages that are slowly fading away in the current generation.

The proposal comes just a few months after the Ministry of Education strongly opposed a plan to teach mother tongue in schools, arguing that it is impractical and a step backward.
