United States President Donald Trump is set to make his maiden telephone call to an East African head of state, speaking with President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya.
The call, scheduled for 6:15 pm Kenyan time, which corresponds to 10:15 am Washington time, is expected to last 30 minutes, according to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
Regional security, the situation in Somalia, and the drought affecting East Africa are among the topics President Trump and President Kenyatta plan to discuss.
Prior to this call, President Trump had spoken with other African leaders, including Nigeria’s President Mohammadu Buhari and South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma on February 13, shortly after his inauguration on January 20.
In his conversation with President Buhari, President Trump expressed support for the fight against Boko Haram, including through the sale of an aircraft to aid in security efforts in the West African region.
With President Zuma, the discussion centered on strengthening bilateral trade ties between the United States and South Africa, with President Trump indicating an interest in exploring new trade opportunities.
