Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga received an international certificate of recognition for his environmental conservation activities from the Green Hand Organization at his Capitol Hill office in Nairobi.
This recognition came as President Uhuru Kenyatta was facing criticism for his handling of an environmental issue in Mombasa, where a heroin-laden ship was blown up and sunk into the sea, raising concerns about potential environmental hazards.
Response and Challenge ¶
Raila Odinga challenged Kenyan leaders, particularly those in the government of Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto, to prioritize environmental conservation and protect natural resources. He cited his own efforts during his tenure as Prime Minister, including the initiation of the Mau Forest conservation strategy, which involved ejecting individuals who had encroached on the water tower.
Our Constitution and Vision 2030 envisage a right to a clean environment. That calls for wise use of all our natural resources, which are our national resources as well.
Raila Odinga emphasized the importance of responsible management of natural resources and called on the current leadership to emulate his approach to environmental conservation.
