Nakumatt Ukay Supermarket in Westlands, Nairobi, was closed indefinitely after a heavy downpour on Saturday evening caused significant damage and loss of goods.
According to reports, items such as detergents, toiletries, and diapers were washed away from the shelves and floated on the flooded floors of the supermarket.
The Regional Operations and Strategy Director of Nakumatt, Thiagarajan Ramamurthy, stated that operations at the Ukay branch had been temporarily suspended due to the flash flooding challenges experienced in parts of Nairobi.
"Arising from the flash flooding challenges experienced in parts of Nairobi and specifically at the Ukay Centre shopping mall in the Westlands business district, on Saturday night, Nakumatt Holdings, wishes to confirm the temporary suspension of operations at Nakumatt Ukay Supermarket,"
Ramamurthy said. As a result, Nakumatt Highridge Supermarket began operating 24 hours a day to meet the immediate needs of customers in the Westlands and Parklands business districts.
The heavy downpour, which started at 5 pm, also caused a heavy traffic buildup on most city roads and resulted in at least ten cars being submerged in the floodwaters outside the mall. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
