Moses Dola, who faces murder charges over the death of his wife Wambui Kabiru, an NTV journalist, has spoken about his experience in a Kenyan prison.
Wambui Kabiru was found dead by neighbors in their two-bedroom house in Umoja estate on May 1, 2011. Her body was found carefully tucked in a bed in a locked bedroom with foam oozing from her mouth and blood from her nose and right ear.
Dola went into hiding after the incident but was arrested two weeks later. He remained in custody until September 2011, when he was released on a Ksh 500,000 cash bail.
Although he spent only four months in prison, Dola shared his observations about life in a Kenyan penitentiary. In an interview with The Star, he described prison as a mental torture zone, saying:
So once you are in prison, you find yourself confined, you don’t have extra room to move around. So you don’t have communication to the outside world and that’s the most important thing… you are in like a torture zone, a mental torture zone… maybe because of some of the ills or some crimes that you did.
Dola used his time in prison to create his own entertainment company, D-entertainment, which aims to help ex-convicts gain employment. He reflected on his experience, stating that after initial difficulties, he came to accept his situation and sought to make a positive impact.
