On July 24, 2019, Tanzanian President John Magufuli received 35 kilograms of gold valued at Ksh. 100 million, which was intercepted at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi last year.

The gold was seized from a Tanzanian national who was arrested on February 21, 2019, while attempting to smuggle it to Dubai.

Kenyan authorities handed over the gold to President Magufuli in a ceremony, where he praised President Uhuru Kenyatta's leadership and commitment to fighting corruption.

President Magufuli also noted that the return of the gold was a testament to the good leadership of President Kenyatta, saying that if they were 'bad leaders', the gold would never have been returned.

During the ceremony, President Kenyatta spoke to President Magufuli over the phone, warning those dealing in illegal trade that they would not be tolerated and would have nowhere to hide.

The two leaders agreed to intensify the fight against illicit gold trade in the region.

Senior officials from both countries, including Attorney General Paul Kihara, Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti, and Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji, were present during the handover.
