The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has concluded its mass voter registration exercise, falling short of its target by a significant margin.
The IEBC had aimed to register between four and six million voters but only managed to register slightly more than two million new voters.
The exercise, which began on January 14, 2016, was initially scheduled to run for one month but was extended by two days due to a court order.
Nairobi County led in terms of registered voters, with 412,382 new registrations, achieving only 48% of its target.
Other counties' performance included:
- Kiambu: 206,337 new voters, reaching 82% of its target
- Machakos: 102,302 new voters
- Kisumu: 86,561 new voters
- Homa Bay: 82,381 new voters
- Siaya: 61,400 new voters
- Murang'a: 90,475 new voters
- Kitui: 76,391 new voters
- Makueni: 71,525 new voters
- Embu: 66,069 new voters
- Meru: 158,147 new voters
- Tharaka Nithi: 42,305 new voters
- Garissa: 33,794 new voters, achieving 82% of its target
- Kajiado: 70,662 new voters, exceeding its target by 212%
- Marsabit: 17,662 new voters, reaching 60% of its target
According to the IEBC, these figures indicate a lower-than-expected turnout for the voter registration exercise.
