On July 24, 2019, the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) underwent a significant change in leadership following the implication of its Director General, Geoffrey Wahungu, in the Arror and Kimwarer dam scandal.
Mamo B Mamo, previously the deputy director for Environmental Education and Information, has been appointed as the acting Director General of Nema.
The move comes after Wahungu was arrested by detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at his home and charged with abuse of office and conspiracy to defraud among other economic crimes.
Wahungu had been released on bond by a Milimani Court, but his replacement as Nema DG has been made despite this.
According to Nema's Twitter account, the Board of Management appointed Mamo B Mamo as the Acting Director General, stating, “Board of Management has appointed Mr Mamo B. Mamo as the Acting Director General. This followed the arraignment in court of the current DG.”
