A recent online revelation has sparked a heated debate among Kenyans on Twitter, with many feeling cheated by the Africa Cancer Foundation, which initiated a campaign to raise funds for University of Nairobi student Emmanuel Otieno, also known as Jadudi, to undergo brain surgery abroad.
In September, the Kenyan public raised Sh 7 million for Jadudi's medical expenses. However, it has emerged that his medical expenses were already fully catered for.
Evidence and Context ¶
A Twitter user, @Slyy_W, posted a series of tweets questioning what happened to the millions of shillings donated for Jadudi's treatment, citing information from a reliable source that the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) had covered Jadudi's medical expenses.
Zawadi Nyong'o, CEO of Africa Cancer Foundation, responded to the allegations, stating that NHIF only stepped in to cover Jadudi's medical expenses when he was already in India for the brain tumor surgery.
Response and Consequences ¶
Zawadi Nyong'o tweeted that the foundation had nothing to hide and that all accounts related to Jadudi's medical trust were transparent. She also explained that Jadudi's mother had experienced difficulties with NHIF while seeking funds for her son's treatment.
Biko Zulu, the blogger who first brought Jadudi's plight to the attention of the Kenyan public, explained his involvement in the campaign, stating that he was approached by Africa Cancer Foundation and told that Jadudi needed about Sh 1 million for treatment. Zulu said he was not involved in the collection of the Sh 7 million and did not know that NHIF had taken care of the medical bill until he learned about it on social media.
