Joseph Njuguna, also known as Karis, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for his role in the murder of Kiru Boys’ Secondary School principal Solomon Mwangi.
Njuguna pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges, stating that he participated in the crime after being promised KES 400,000 by Mwangi’s wife, Jane Muthoni Mbuthi.
High Court Judge Joel Ngugi handed down the sentence, rejecting a joint application by the prosecution and defense for a non-custodial sentence. The application was based on Njuguna’s remorse and his assistance in uncovering the murder.
Although Njuguna did not directly plan or execute the murder, Judge Ngugi noted that he failed to act to prevent the crime, despite being aware of it. The judge described Njuguna’s actions as a "wanton disregard for human life."
Mwangi’s body was found in a thicket in Kiambu in 2016. His widow, Jane Muthoni, is currently facing murder charges.
