A group of Kenyans, including Citizen TV Sports Editor Mike Okinyi and Gor Mahia fan Jared Abong'o, also known as Jaro Soja, were arrested by Tanzanian police in Dar es Salaam on Friday evening.
According to the original account, the arrests occurred while the individuals were attending the Cecafa Club Championship. Trouble began when Jaro Soja was apprehended by stadium stewards for standing on seats during a match. Citizen TV cameraman Jackton Njehia, who was filming the incident, was also arrested.
Mike Okinyi, who inquired about the situation, was subsequently arrested and handcuffed alongside the others. They were taken to the Chang'ombe Police station, although the specific charges against them are unclear.
Late on Friday night, Okinyi posted on Twitter:
"We are iut baba (sic)……we have been charged with "shambulio"……back to the cop station kesho 10am"
He later added:
Pole guys, the whole of second half till now we were in jail……arrested for filming stewards harassing fans!!
The Kenyan High Commission in Tanzania and tournament Secretary General Nicholas Musonye intervened, securing the release of the detained individuals. However, they received a stern warning regarding their alleged conduct.
