The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced it would release the total number of applicants enlisted in the recently concluded Mass Voter Registration (MVR) exercise.
According to the IEBC's official Twitter handle, the results were expected to be made public the day after the announcement.
A tweet from the IEBC stated, "The mass voter registration is now over. Thank you to all those who took time to register. We release the total number of applicants tomorrow."
Exercise Extension and Court Ruling ¶
The MVR exercise ended on Sunday, following a court extension from February 14 to 19. Justice Chacha Mwita directed the IEBC to continue the exercise until February 19, after a case was filed by activist Okiya Omtatah. Omtatah argued that closing the exercise earlier would lock out potential voters who had not received their National Identity Cards or Passports.
By the end of the third week, the IEBC had registered 2,164,185 voters, falling short of the target of six million new voters.
Diaspora Voting and Party Nomination Rules ¶
The IEBC also announced that voter registration in the Diaspora would be limited to five African countries and would only be for the presidential poll. The exercise is set to run until March 6 and will require Kenyan adults with a valid passport to visit their High Commission offices in Kigali, Rwanda; Bujumbura, Burundi; Kampala, Uganda; Pretoria, South Africa; Arusha; and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to be enlisted as voters.
The commission has pushed the submission of party nomination rules to March 6, giving parties more time to finalize their membership registration. This decision comes after some parties expressed that they needed more time to complete the process, despite the initial deadline.
