On July 24, 2019, a court in Kenya heard a shocking claim from a man accused of sexual assault. Cyrus Kusimba Masinde, 16-year-old E.S.'s alleged perpetrator, expressed surprise that the victim had not checked up on him since his arrest.
According to the charge sheet, Masinde allegedly committed the crimes on January and February 2019 at Kibagare slum in Westlands sub-county. He was charged with sexual assault and committing an indecent act with a child, contrary to section 11 of the Sexual Offences Act.
Appearing before Magistrate Kennedy Cheruyot, Masinde pleaded not guilty to all charges and was released on a Ksh. 1 million bond. The case will be heard on August 10, 2019.
Magistrate Cheruyot dismissed Masinde's sentiments, stating that he did not see why the accused person would want the victim to visit him. Masinde's claim that he did not know where the victim was and that she had not checked up on him since his arrest was met with skepticism by the court.
