The Outer Ring Road project, commissioned by President Uhuru Kenyatta in January 2015, aims to transform Eastlands through de-congestion of the notorious Jogoo Road and reduce transport costs in the populous eastlands region of Nairobi.
This project is considered the most ambitious undertaking by the Government in Nairobi since the construction of the Thika superhighway in 2009.
Upon completion, the road will significantly cut travel time from Thika Road to Mombasa Road, reducing it from three hours to as little as 10 minutes.
The 13-kilometer dual carriageway will connect Thika superhighway at the GSU Headquarters to Airport North Road at Taj Shopping Mall next to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
The road is designed to have up to 10 lanes at its widest section between the junctions of Kangundo Road and Mumias South Road, and will feature six interchanges, service roads, 10 footbridges, and subways for pedestrian safety.
A Kenya Urban Roads authority spokesperson noted that once the road is complete, a person from Ruaraka can reach JKIA in less than 10 minutes, as the road has been designed to allow speeds of at least 70 km/h.
The project, initially estimated to cost KSh 7.4 billion, has seen variations in design due to site conditions and improvements, pushing the cost estimates to the current KSh 8.4 billion.
