Hundreds of travellers were stuck in a traffic jam on the Nairobi – Mombasa highway on April 24, 2016, in a gridlock that lasted for more than 12 hours.
The traffic jam, which started from Mto wa Mawe in Athi River and stretched to Chumvi on the junction to Machakos town, was caused by a truck whose head dislodged and plunged into a ditch near Green Park Homes, leaving the trailer on the road.
According to Machakos County Deputy Commissioner George Onyango, the trailer blocked the road, causing the snarl-up of vehicles on both sides of the road. He added that rescue efforts were made difficult by the heavy rains that pounded the area overnight.
Vehicles were being diverted to Kangundo Road, but it soon experienced a massive traffic jam as well. A group of journalists from Ahero, Kisumu County, who were travelling for a burial, were stuck at Kyumbi junction by 9 am.
One of the journalists, Michael Mutinda, expressed his frustration, saying,
