Officials from the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) have expressed willingness to remain in jail for 28 days, despite visible signs of physical weakness.
According to interviews with prison wardens, the seven officials are being treated well and have access to basic necessities like water, food, and clothing. The officials were jailed by a labor court for one month due to contempt of court, after failing to call off a strike that has entered its 75th day.
The strike was declared illegal by the court. The jailed officials include Samuel Oroko, Ouma Oluga, Daisy Korir, Titus Ondoro, Allan Ochanji, Mwachonda Chibadzi, and Evelyne Chege.
KMPDU board members Mungai Richard and Alex Muturi have stated that the union will not engage with the government, as the jailed officials are the only ones authorized to do so. Daisy Korir, one of the jailed officials, has vowed to serve her full term if it means bringing reform to the country's health sector.
Korir made this statement to ODM leaders Gladys Wanga, Timothy Bosire, and Florence Mutua, who visited her in prison. According to Wanga, Korir was suffering from ulcers but received medical attention and was in good spirits during their meeting.
