On July 24, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta made key appointments to the National Treasury and Planning department, amidst corruption charges against former Treasury CS Henry Rotich.
Ukur Yattani, the Labour Cabinet Secretary, has been appointed as the acting National Treasury and Planning Secretary, replacing Mr Rotich.
Yattani, a former Marsabit Governor who lost his 2017 gubernatorial re-election bid, has been serving as Kenya's labour and social protection Cabinet secretary.
Dr Julius Muia, the Principal Secretary in the State department for planning, has also moved to the National Treasury to occupy the position left vacant by Dr Kamau Thugge, who is also facing corruption charges alongside Mr Rotich.
State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena-Mararo stated that the appointments were made 'in order to ensure smooth operations and continuity at the National Treasury and in line Ministries following the Court Order affecting Mr Rotich and Dr Kamau Thugge.'
Other key appointments include Devolution PS Torome Saitoti moving to occupy the position left by Dr Muia, and Immigration PS, Major-General (Rtd) Gordon Kihalangwa being shuffled to the defence ministry as the new PS.
