Ouma Oluga, the secretary general of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Unions (KMPDU), has come under scrutiny for past social media comments deemed inciteful by many Kenyans.
Oluga has been a key figure in the push for the government to implement the 2013 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) as the doctors' strike continues. However, social media updates from 2014 have resurfaced, showing comments that can be perceived as tribal incitement.
On May 15, 2014, Oluga posted an update on social media discussing the possibility of an end to the Kikuyu presidency in Kenya. He wrote,
It may take 20 years or 100 years to come but one day you will be on the side of those who are not in power, you will be longing to be appointed to those powerful positions you are distributing among Mureithis, we are all taking note (painfully) and keeping quiet.
Additionally, Oluga mentioned that the concept of a Kikuyu country would eventually cease to exist as the bubble that had been created would explode.
In another post, Oluga suggested that Kenya might need to be rebuilt, drawing comparisons to Rwanda's experience following the genocide that killed hundreds of Rwandans.
These comments have been criticized by many, with some terming the ongoing doctors' strike as politically motivated. Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua recalled being warned by Oluga and his team to prepare for the worst, implying that the strike was a form of retaliation.
The screenshots of Oluga's Facebook posts have since disappeared, but their content has sparked significant debate and criticism.
