A 41-year-old prophetess, Prisca Bvekwa, has been charged with homicide following the death of a pregnant woman, Esnath Sengamayi, who gave birth at her shrine.
Sengamayi had visited Bvekwa, also known as Madzimai Prisca, at her shrine in St Barnabas for divine intervention over her pregnancy. Although Sengamayi successfully delivered a baby boy, she died a few hours later due to post-natal complications.
According to reports, Sengamayi's husband, Tendai Kwesu, notified the authorities about his wife's death, leading to the police collecting her body from the shrine. An autopsy was conducted by Dr. Nyapesa at Rusape General Hospital mortuary, revealing that Sengamayi died from excessive bleeding.
Bvekwa was subsequently arrested and accused of negligence and possible homicide. She has been remanded as the inquest into Sengamayi's death continues and is expected to appear in court once the investigation is finalized.
