The Standard Media Group started issuing retrenchment letters to some of its staff on August 3, 2015, as part of efforts to reduce operational costs.
At least 10 employees had already opted for voluntary early retirement and received letters, according to a source close to the management.
A source stated,
"Retrenchment starts today. They haven’t issued letters yet,"
and added that a list of redundant staff was expected soon.
The retrenchment is expected to affect various roles, including journalists, radio presenters, TV/radio producers, drivers, and finance personnel.

In June, the management had invited all staff to apply for optional early retirement ahead of the retrenchment exercise. According to Group CEO Sam Shollei, staff members who opted for early retirement would receive a better package than those who waited to be retrenched, with the package depending on factors such as years of service, salary, and union membership.
