Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka faced criticism after a photo surfaced on social media showing him sharing a meal of chips with a group of youth in his office.
The photo sparked an online debate about whether the opposition leader was being frugal or simply identifying with the youth.
Context of the Meeting ¶
A young lady, Angela Mutheu, claimed in a Facebook post that Kalonzo had called a meeting with them to discuss youth leadership and ordered chips worth Sh 70, which he then bargained down to Sh 65.
However, Kalonzo's aide, Denis Kavisu, countered this narrative, stating that the youth had paid the Cord co-principal a courtesy call and he had offered to share his meal with them.
According to Kavisu, Kalonzo is a simple Kenyan from a humble background who knows what it feels like to sleep hungry, and was therefore identifying with the youth.
The incident is not the first time Kalonzo has faced online ridicule over allegations of stinginess. During Fidel Odinga's burial, he was accused of making a contribution of Sh 25,000, which he later clarified was actually Sh 200,000.
