Ishmael Omondi, the individual behind the Al Shabaab parody Twitter account, has been released from police custody according to recent updates on his timeline.
On Wednesday, Police Inspector General David Kimaiyo announced that Omondi had been arrested following tweets allegedly from Al Shabaab claiming responsibility for the Mpeketoni Attack, contradicting the government's stance that Al Shabaab was not responsible and instead blaming the attack on targeting the Kikuyu community.
Al Shabaab has since released an audio clip claiming responsibility for the attack. According to Kimaiyo, Omondi operated a pseudo website and the Twitter account in question, despite the account containing sarcastic tweets, leading Kimaiyo to believe Omondi had links with Al Shabaab.
Twenty-four hours after his alleged arrest in Kariakor, Nairobi, with no visual evidence provided to the media, the Twitter account is active again, raising questions about whether Omondi was indeed arrested and if so, which court he was arraigned in.
The recent activity on the Twitter account has sparked further inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Omondi's case.
