Caroline Mutoko, a presenter at Kiss 100 FM, criticized blogger Cyprian Nyakundi and his followers on social media.
Mutoko expressed disappointment and frustration with the online support for Nyakundi, who is involved in a legal case with telecoms giant Safaricom. She argued that the support was superficial and hypocritical, with many of Nyakundi's followers failing to provide tangible assistance.
Mutoko's Statement ¶
Mutoko stated, Poor Nyakundi – We are shallow, insincere and worst of all, hypocrites. She questioned the sincerity of Nyakundi's supporters, pointing out that they had not provided meaningful help, such as setting up a fund to cover his legal fees or showing up in court to support him.
Mutoko also criticized the fact that many of Nyakundi's supporters were using Safaricom lines to express their support on Twitter, despite allegedly opposing the company. She argued that this inconsistency demonstrated the hypocrisy of Nyakundi's followers.
Libel Case ¶
Mutoko noted that in a libel case, the burden of proof lies with the accused, and that Nyakundi would need to provide evidence to support his claims. She expressed concern that Nyakundi was not receiving adequate advice or support, which could harm his case.
Mutoko also pointed out that Nyakundi had violated a gag order by discussing Safaricom on his platforms, which could have negative consequences for his case.
Broader Critique ¶
Mutoko's critique extended beyond Nyakundi's case, as she argued that Kenyans tend to be shallow and insincere in their online interactions. She cited examples of people who had failed to support causes or individuals they claimed to care about, such as Boniface Mwangi and Martha Karua.
