On June 17, 2016, eight members of Kenya's parliament were charged with incitement to violence.
The lawmakers, representing both Jubilee and Cord parties, appeared in court where each was formally charged.
The accused include Senator Johnson Muthama (Machakos), MPs Junet Mohammed (Suna East), Timothy Bosire (Kitutu Masaba), Aisha Jumwa (Kilifi), Florence Mutua (Busia), Moses Kuria (Gatundu South), Kimani Ngunjiri (Bahati), and Ferdinand Waititu (Kabete).
According to the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), additional charges may be brought against the legislators in future court appearances.
Francis ole Kaparo, chairman of the NCIC, stated that the commission would strongly oppose bail for the MPs, who had been in custody since Tuesday after a magistrate and a judge denied their bail requests.
A significant police presence was observed at the court, with supporters of the leaders gathering in the area.
Preparations were underway to present the leaders before a judge, and family members of the accused had already arrived at the court chambers.
