Tony Gachoka, a former aide to Raila Odinga, began serving his prison sentence after failing to pay a Ksh 2 million fine. Gachoka and TV journalist Jeff Koinange were each fined for contempt of court.

Gachoka was unable to pay the fine, unlike Jeff Koinange, who paid promptly. As a result, Gachoka was booked into the Industrial Area Remand Prison.

Gachoka had become known for his criticism of Raila Odinga on Jeff Koinange's show. The two had also made claims about businessman Jimmy Wanjigi, which led to a defamation lawsuit.

The fines were imposed due to their failure to comply with court orders. A Facebook user described Gachoka's experience in prison, saying he was enjoying a hearty breakfast of hot sugarless porridge that has traces of sand particles at Nairobi’s notorious Remand Prison and was sitting in his cold cell after cleaning a pile of shit from the pail that serves as communal toilet.

The user also questioned who would pay Gachoka's fine, noting that he had spent years criticizing Raila Odinga in hopes of gaining favor with the Jubilee party.
