Deputy President William Ruto and retired President Daniel arap Moi put aside their political differences to attend the silver jubilee celebrations of Catholic Diocese of Eldoret Bishop Cornelius Korir at the Mother of Apostles Seminary in Eldoret.

During the ceremony, Mr Ruto altered protocol to allow the retired president to deliver the keynote speech, showing respect for his predecessor.

Development and Context

The event was attended by a large crowd of Catholic faithful, as well as several high-profile politicians, including governors Jackson Mandago and Cleophas Lagat, senators Kipchumba Murkomen and Kindiki Kithure, and MPs Alfred Keter and Dan Kazungu.

According to Mr Ruto, the Jubilee government plans to support peace initiatives led by religious leaders in the country, particularly in the volatile North Rift region.

「The top Jubilee government brass will soon hold a meeting with all religious leaders in the country to seek ways on how we can collaborate to bring peace among wrangling communities in the country and more so in the volatile North Rift region,」said Mr Ruto.

Response and Consequences

Retired President Moi praised Bishop Korir as a 「true servant of God」 who has committed himself to preaching peace, and urged Kenyans to emulate the bishop's example by working together to promote peace and love.

Other speakers, including Nandi Governor Cleophas Lagat and Senator Kindiki Kithure, also emphasized the importance of peace and called on residents of conflict-affected areas to put aside their differences.

Malindi MP Dan Kazungu, the only opposition member at the ceremony, commended Bishop Korir for his efforts in building peace among conflicting communities.
