Several African celebrities have publicly disclosed their HIV status in an effort to raise awareness and combat the stigma surrounding the disease.
These individuals hope that by sharing their experiences, they can provide support and inspiration to others living with HIV and AIDS.

Koyo Bala, a public figure, revealed his HIV-positive status in a 2011 interview. He expressed his desire to utilize his platform to help others cope with their diagnosis and foster a sense of hope. Bala stated: "I am HIV-positive, and as a celebrity and someone who is openly gay, it is important to come out. I want to use my bubbly personality to help those struggling to come to terms with their status and instil a sense of hope." Unfortunately, Bala passed away due to cancer in 2015.
Criselda Kananda, a Zambian radio DJ, has been living with HIV for over 13 years. Despite her diagnosis, she has given birth to three children and continues to work as a motivational speaker, professional counselor, and medical underwriter. Kananda is also a member of the South African National AIDS Council.
Lesego Motsepe, a TV star known for her role in Isidingo, publicly disclosed her HIV status in 2011. She aims to use her platform to raise awareness and support for those affected by the disease. Motsepe said: "Our society had made this virus a monster and all it is, is a virus. I’m doing it for the voiceless people out there who just found out today, and know that I’ve got their back."
Musa ‘Queen’ Njoko, a gospel musician, revealed her HIV status in 1995 at the age of 22. Although treatment was not readily available in South Africa at the time, she managed to find support despite the prevailing stigma and hostility.
Thabang Sefatsa, a former professional football player, has spoken out about his HIV status, criticizing the stigma that prevents other athletes from disclosing their status or offering support.
