A New York Times photographer, Tyler Hicks, received the 2014 Pulitzer Prize in breaking news photography for his coverage of the terrorist attack at the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Pulitzer committee awarded Mr. Hicks the $10,000 prize for his "compelling pictures that showed skill and bravery in documenting the unfolding terrorist attack at Westgate mall in Kenya."
Mr. Hicks' photos, published in The New York Times, included images of slain, wounded, and terrified shoppers, as well as guards and soldiers hunting for the attackers. One dramatic shot showed a woman trying to shelter two children from the massacre.
Mr. Hicks was part of a New York Times team that won a Pulitzer Prize in 2009 for international reporting in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He currently lives in Istanbul, Turkey, but is often away on assignment.
The attack on the Westgate Mall occurred on September 21, 2013, and left more than 60 people dead.
