A 30-year-old mother of four gave birth to a baby boy with two heads at SP Hospital in India. The child died a few hours after birth.
The mother reportedly did not know she was carrying a child with two heads until a day before the operation, when an ultrasound scan revealed the condition.
Discovery and Reaction ¶
According to a local daily, the parents, Mrs Nsreen and her 34-year-old husband, Mr Mohammad, discovered about their child’s condition following the ultrasound scan. Despite the shocking news, the couple made it clear that they were not going to reject or despise their child, no matter the circumstances surrounding his birth.
When the child was finally born, the doctors described him as a 'miraculous child.' The parents considered him a 'wonderful gift from God.'
Medical Explanation ¶
Medical experts say the probability of giving birth to conjoined twins is once in every 100,000 births. Conjoined twins develop when a woman produces just one egg that doesn’t fully separate after being fertilized. The growing embryo then starts to split during the first few weeks of pregnancy but stops before the process is finalized.
Experts note that most conjoined twins die because their organs cannot support their bodily needs. Medical statistics show that an estimated 40 percent of conjoined twins are delivered when they are already dead, whereas about 35 percent die shortly after birth.
