Nairobi County Government has introduced new fees for funeral services, increasing the cost of burials while reducing the cost of cremations.
In Kenya, where burial is traditionally the preferred method of handling the deceased, these changes may be seen as significant.
According to the 2015/2016 County Finance Bill, the cost of a burial has risen from Ksh 25,000 to Ksh 30,000. In contrast, cremation costs have decreased from Ksh 13,000 to Ksh 9,000. The cost of cremating a child is now Sh6,000, and an infant is Sh4,000. However, the cost of burying a child has increased from Ksh 15,000 to Ksh 22,000.
The fee for scattering ashes is Sh1,000.
