A 26-year-old woman from Mombasa bled to death after undergoing a Caesarean section at Coast General Hospital, according to her family, who claim that medical negligence led to her death.
Thomas Mwongela, the woman's husband, is seeking government action against the doctors involved in the operation. He stated that his wife, Jane Achieng, developed complications after the procedure, which was performed on a Friday.
Investigation Underway ¶
Deputy Administrator Mary Ocholla of Coast General Hospital said an investigation into the matter is underway and action will be taken if the doctors are found to be at fault. Dr. Ocholla emphasized that every maternal death is a concern, particularly in light of the Beyond Zero campaign.
Mr. Mwongela reported that doctors had recommended the Caesarean section due to his wife's birth canal not dilating sufficiently for a normal delivery. However, he claimed that she was discharged on Sunday, despite experiencing severe abdominal pain.
On Tuesday, Ms. Achieng was readmitted to the hospital, where a female doctor suspected that the initial operation may have been botched, leading to internal bleeding. A second operation was performed, lasting over six hours.
Despite the efforts, Ms. Achieng's condition deteriorated, and she died at 4am on Wednesday before a blood transfusion could be administered. Her husband is now seeking justice, stating that his wife would still be alive if the initial operation had been performed properly.
