Negotiations between doctors and the government reached an impasse on Tuesday, March 7. In response, President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the termination of doctors who failed to resume work, resulting in 12 dismissals from the Kenyatta National Hospital so far.
Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale, who is also a doctor, cautioned President Kenyatta against acting out of spite on the sensitive issue of the doctors' strike. Speaking in an interview on Thursday, March 9, Senator Khalwale condemned the decision to fire doctors who did not return to work after talks broke down.
Senator Khalwale expressed concern that the President was receiving poor advice, stating,
"I want to appeal to the President that rising to the position of Head of State demands that he must keep his cool, however such, he must keep his cool."
He further described the advice given to the President as "laughable" and said,
"What he (Uhuru) is doing is responding to advice which is only laughable."
On Wednesday, March 8, President Kenyatta had ordered doctors to return to work, warning that those who continued to strike would face termination and be replaced by other doctors. So far, 12 medical practitioners from the Kenyatta National Hospital have received dismissal letters.
