A bishop has been removed from a degree program at Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology (JKUAT) after his academic papers were found to be forged.
Bishop David Kariuki Ngare, also known as Gakuyo, is seeking the Kiambu gubernatorial seat on a Jubilee party ticket. He was de-registered from the university after failing to present his form four certificate.
An investigation by NTV indicated that the bishop appeared to have forged his Primary school certificate and did not attend high school, yet he was admitted to a university for a degree course.
According to the investigation, Kariuki has a Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) certificate allegedly acquired in 1983 from Munyu Primary school in Nyeri county, but the index number does not belong to that school. His name is also not among candidates who sat the exam in 1983 in the school.
Kariuki also obtained his primary school leaving certificate 21 years after he left the school, raising eyebrows. In his application for the degree, he claimed to have attended International School of Christ between 2000-2001 and later in 2016, claimed he acquired an honorary degree from Cambridge Theological Seminary. However, he did not mention attending high school.
The 49-year-old had applied for a degree course at JKUAT's Westlands campus to study County Governance. After admission, he performed well and got 'As' and 'Bs' grades in various units in his first semester.
However, the university wrote to him after four months of his first semester for a 'friendly discussion' on December 1, 2016. The Bishop was later de-registered on January 12, 2017, for failing to present his form four certificate.
